Agent Dana Scully
The history of Mulder and Scully is ridden with both blatant and subtle attempts by both parties to show their animosity toward each other. Any discussion of which must begin with the suspicion filled pre-animosity dialogue that began it all. Yes, that's right, I refer to nothing less than the agent's famous "first meeting" discussion. Please note Scully's underlying tones of animosity. Note her building frustration and defensiveness. Witness the first in a long line of words, jibes, and looks which conclusively prove that: Scully hates Mulder!
It is obvious that from the beginning that Scully doesn't quite know how to deal with her true feelings toward agent Mulder. She doesn't like him certainly, but the realization of her animosity is slow in coming. Initially we find Scully commenting to Mulder only in soft, reserved, hopefully alienating terms such as this quiet, "Leave me alone." It doesn't take long for Scully's irritation to come into fruition as we hear early into the series more straightforward comments like this: "Mulder, you're crazy." Note the simple and factual tone. This is Scully wanting some sense of rationality to penetrate Mulder's thick skull.
Remember Mulder's quick wit. By the time Scully is finally getting comfortable expressing the factual jab, her irreverant partner is already in full insulting swing. Scully is forced to the defensive. In the midst of Mulder's attacks her rebuttles are small, starting initially with almost desperate comebacks. The awkward, "Like that really hurt." shows the causual observer that Scully is a beginner in expressing her anger. Soon to follow, however, is the slightly more confident, "Give it up." proving to the audience that Scully herself does not intend to give up this battle.
Give up indeed! By this time Scully is so frustrated by Mulder's continued attacks that she decides to go to the offensive. This is truly "Payback time." for Scully. Her remarks toward Mulder, turn increasingly sarcastic and treatening. Beginning with insulting Mulder's attacks on her, we hear, Ooo, you scare me." and her first threat, "Keep that up, Mulder, and I'll hurt you like that beast woman." and the very direct, "Bite me." It is also shortly after these remarks that we hear her most biting attacks at Mulder's inability to make comebacks. "Did that Hurt?" and "Quitting so soon?" show Scully, temporarily at least, gaining the upper hand in this war of hatred.
The victory is short lived, however, as Mulder begins his Degradation Narratives (*see Mulder's Proof by sounds on Right) and Scully is forced to change tactics. Back to the defensive, she takes the attacks on her sexuality as signs of Mulder's own twisted desires and pushes it back in his face. Comebacks such as, "You wish." and "In your dreams." may seem weak in comparison to Scully's previous attacks, but have served her well enough in this difficult and admittedly awkward battle. Steps forward have been made, however, as we see Scully retalliate with a childish but effective (and hilarious)sexual attack of her own.
Although Scully has been unable to fully come to terms with the extreme hatred she has for Mulder, her increasing ability to combat Mulder gives hope to MASHEO fans everywhere.
